Thanks, Atticus Finch. Iâm with you.
âHowdy!â the bartender said standing by their booth. âFix yâall up with some libation?â
Maggie smiled. Ms. Barker would have called that a ten-dollar word. âUse one whenever you want to impress someone,â sheâd say. Right now, Maggie wished more than anything that she was back in Ms. Barkerâs class attempting to figure out the intricacies of diagrammingâand thinking that would be the most difficult task sheâd ever have to tackle.
âWhat do you recommend?â Jackson asked. âSomething local?â
âCraft beer your thing?â
âSure,â Jackson said. âYour pick. Got anything to go with it?â
âDepends on what youâre after. Plenty of fresh fat oysters. Fried green tomatoes. Key lime pie donuts, apple fritters.â
âAnything chocolate?â Maggie asked.
âBest Kentucky Bourbon pie south of the Mason-Dixon line.â
Looking at the menu hanging on a chalkboard behind the bar, Jackson said, âIâll have dill pickle chips and fried wings.â
âBest choice,â said the bartender, who doubled as the waiter.
âIâll have the pie,â Maggie said.
She took out a pen and started making a list. âIâm keeping tally,â she said. âIâll pay you back when weâre home. I didnât bring much cash.â
âLong as youâre here, youâre my guest. Or adopted daughter. Or whatever.â
âSidekick works,â she said without looking up.
âCome on,â Jackson said. âCheer up. I hate seeing unhappy people.â
âYou guys choose one of these brews for your next round.â The bartender set down two glasses. âAnd if this ainât the best damn pie you ever ate, itâs on the house.â
âItâs not,â Maggie said before taking a bite.
âHa! Two on the house.â The bartender saluted her.
For the next half hour, Maggie and Jackson barely acknowledged each other. Jackson devoured his wings and ordered a second round, and Maggie concentrated on the pie.
âHey, you see that?â Jackson pointed to the mini juke box at the end of their table. âHavenât seen one of these since Alabama.â He put in a dime. âYour choice. Pick a song.â
âWhy are you being nice all of a sudden?â she asked. âTotally out of character.â
Jackson looked out the window. âI get why youâre here.â
Maggie slid over and flipped the pages on the juke box. She pushed the buttons for âThe Gambler.â In honor of Lucy, of course. Maybe the fact that the song was there was a good omen.
A couple passed by their table. âCome on! We canât be dancing alone.â
Jackson stood up. âMay I?â
Maggie took his hand and they walked to a small center area left open for dancing. As the song played, Maggieâs body remembered her sixth-grade dance, and she found herself side-stepping and pivoting, like sheâd been doing it every day of her life.
âNot bad,â Jackson said.
âYour mama did a good job in the manners department,â she said as she sang along.
Youâve got to know when to hold âem
Know when to fold âem
Know when to walk away
And know when to run
Jackson put his arm around her waist when Randy Travisâs âForever and Ever, Amen,â came onâand he held her tight.
His hand felt good on her back. For a few seconds, Maggie suspended disbelief and allowed herself to enjoy being in a manâs arms, in Mr.
